House officers receive an extensive
range of benefits through the University of Chicago Hospitals. The following
is only a brief outline of these currently available benefits.
Health Insurance - House officers may choose from one of three
health plans. The current cost for these plans varies from $0 to $83 per
month for single coverage and $93 and $151 for family coverage.
Dental Insurance - (Optional participation) This managed-care
plan provides comprehensive dental benefits to house officers through
a network of private practice dentists. The plan allows House officers
the option of enrolling in either a DMO or PPO plan. Coverage is free
for a House Officer choosing single coverage in the DMO plan. Monthly
coverage for the PPO plan ranges from $11.22 - $49.95.
Life Insurance - a variety of options - free for $20,000 of
coverage.
Personal Accident -
(Optional participation) This insurance provides coverage for an accidental
injury that results in the death or dismemberment of a house officer or
family member. Single or family coverage options are available and the
coverage amounts range from $20,000 to $500,000. The cost varies depending
on the principle sum.
Long-Term Disability - No cost to residents
HIV Benefits - if occupationally acquired, house
offers are entitled to a lump sum of $150,000 within six months
of the exposure incident.
Vacation - four weeks paid per year.
Sick Leave - five days paid per year.
Medical Leave - four weeks paid for medical or
maternity purposes.
Housestaff spouses, domestic
partners and unmarried dependent children qualify for tuition
remission (one-half the full tuition) at any University of Chicago
school.

For the 2006-2007 year:
- PGY-1 $44,200
- PGY-2 $46,150
- PGY-3 $47,700
- PGY-4 $50,000
Additional benefits include:
flexible spending accounts, workers' compensation, supplemental
retirement annuities, the employee assistance program, Family
Medical Leave Act, leave of absence, funeral leave, educational
meeting leave, lab coats, reduced parking rates, and meal tickets
when on call overnight. More information about benefits will
